GESTATIONAL DIABETES MELLITUS- A NESTED CASE-CONTROL STUDY

BACKGROUND
Prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus is increasing around the world due to high prevalence of risk factors. It is responsible for various adverse pregnancy outcomes.
The aim of the study is to study the occurrence of various maternal and foetal outcomes with gestational diabetes mellitus in a rural block of Assam.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
Present study was a part of larger cohort study. Here, one hundred and ninety three (193) cases and five hundred and seventy nine (579) matched controls were taken. Matching was done by age of the pregnant women.
RESULTS
Obesity was found twice among GDM cases than the controls (OR=2.40, CI=1.218-4.732, p=0.011). Prevalence of caesarean section was higher among GDM cases (p=0.009). Foetal macrosomia, NICU admission of newborn for >2 days, neonatal hypoglycaemia was significantly higher among GDM cases.
CONCLUSION
GDM causes significant complications of both mother and the newborn in terms of higher caesarean rate, macrosomia and neonatal hypoglycaemia and higher rate of admission in NICU >2 days.
